Unlearn these 5 habits to land your next dream job

Hi there,

If you’re trying to break into top product companies like Apple, Meta, Amazon, or fast-growing startups, it’s time to unlearn some old job search habits. We’ve worked with hundreds of job seekers aiming for these roles. Many were talented, experienced, and incredibly smart, yet still stuck in the loop of “no callbacks.” It wasn’t because they weren’t good enough. It’s because they were following advice that used to work but doesn’t anymore.

Here are five things we’ve seen candidates unlearn (and finally start landing interviews):

First, “I’ll just wing the product case.” Top companies aren’t just testing your ideas, they’re testing your structure. Slow down, define the problem, clarify constraints, and think aloud. That’s what they’re actually scoring you on.

Second, “Telling my story once is enough.” You need to anchor your narrative in every round, whether it’s behavioral questions, product thinking, or even in follow-ups. People remember what’s repeated, not what’s said once.

Third, “Silence is safe.” You can’t afford to go quiet in interviews. Talk through trade-offs, share how you’d decide, and be clear even when unsure. That’s how real product leaders show up.

Check out our free resume templates that will help you stand out and apply these strategies the right way.

Fourth, “No questions = no problem.” Interviewers expect curiosity. Ask about team challenges, key metrics, and upcoming bets. Your questions reveal how you think.

And fifth, “Applying everywhere is the best strategy.” It’s not. Choose 5 to 7 companies, optimize your profile for those roles, engage with their people before applying, and then hit apply.

If you’re preparing for top product roles, the game has changed. So change your strategy.

With you every step of the way,

This “Feedback” is a huge red flag

Not because they lacked skills or weren’t a fit, but because they asked about salary, responsibilities, and work culture. Yes, really. This is what the company told them: “For future reference, asking quest...
This is where you should be applying
Hi {{ first_name }}, Most people looking for remote jobs only check LinkedIn and Indeed and then wonder why they’re competing with 500 other applicants for every role. The truth is, the best opportunities aren’t always on the biggest platforms. There are job boards specifically built for remote work, places where companies that are genuinely committed to remote hiring post their roles. N...
If your resume doesn’t show this, you’re losing opportunities
Hi {{ first_name }}, I came across a resume recently that helped this candidate land a $300,000 role at Google. And before you think it was just because of big names like Microsoft or Amazon on it, yes, that helped. But that’s not the full story. Because I’ve seen plenty of candidates from top companies still get rejected. What made this resume stand out was simple: it communicated impact, c...
